The Leopardstown Golf Centre has been a permanent and important aspect of Irish golf since the 1960’s, when it was created in conjunction with John Jacobs, one of the father figures of golf in the modern era and acknowledged as one of the finest teachers in the golfing world.

For over four decades it has served as Ireland’s premier golf practice and tuition centre, providing thousands of golfers of all ages with their first introduction to the game side by side with club golfers striving for game improvement.

It also offers accomplished golfers an ideal environment for honing their skills away from the hustle and bustle of the competitive arena. Indeed, the hard work involved in winning championships on the domestic scene is often done under floodlights during winter evenings at the Leopardstown centre.

The Leopardstown Golf Centre is also home to over 2,500 lady golfers who are members of 25 golfing societies with playing rights on the pleasurable golf course situated within the race track.

All of this activity and the enormous growth in the game in Ireland have inspired dramatic changes which have established the Leopardstown Golf Centre as one of the finest facilities of its kind in Europe, run and staffed by a dedicated team driven by a passion for the game.

Situated in the heart of the famous Leopardstown race track, just a lob wedge from Foxrock village on Dublin’s southside, the Centre could not be better positioned to take full advantage of the convenience of the M50 for golfers travelling from any part of the city and surrounding areas.

An investment of €6m in recent times by Horse Racing Ireland, the owners and promoters, has totally transformed the Leopardstown Golf Centre into a state-of-the-art facility geared to meet the expectations and needs of golfers on all levels.

The new-look centre incorporates a 74-bay floodlit driving range, including 12 floodlit bays on a second level and 15 outdoor bays, all equipped with quality golf balls and the latest ball dispensing technology.

There are two private golf academy rooms on the upper tier where tuition and advanced video swing analysis is provided by the six resident PGA professionals under the direction of M&M Golf Academy duo Michael Allan and Michael Kavanagh.

The whole set-up for tuition is absolutely first class.

The teaching facilities at the Leopardstown Golf Centre include the V One Coaching System used by Butch Harmon and David Leadbetter, the revolutionary Explanar swing machine, and the latest technology in putting instruction and analysis.

A dedicated all-weather 500 sq metre putting and chipping green adds an exciting dimension to the facilities.

The gleaming 22,000 sq ft clubhouse incorporates a welcoming reception area, spacious golf shop, concession units, offices, a meeting room, and a bright and comfortable 100-seater restaurant - The Green Room - with splendid views of the golf course, racecourse and Wicklow mountains.

The Green Room restaurant is open from early morning serving breakfast, snacks and a full European cafe menu throughout the day, and it can be sectioned-off for golf groups. It is open from 8am to 4pm (Mon - Sat) and Sunday brunch (10am - 4pm). It is also ideal for private / corporate events and product launches involving up to 120 people.

A huge plus is the car park area which can accommodate well over 200 vehicles in generous spaces, almost twice the previous capacity.

Significantly, well over €400,000 has been invested in the upgrade of the golf course, including new greens, tees, bunkering, tree planting and the installation of a modern irrigation system.

Yet, green fees remain affordable and the pricing structure makes the golf course very appealing, particularly to local offices and public houses wishing to arrange a competitively priced round on a mid-length course in a full service environment.

Driving the whole operation forward in conjunction with HRI is an exciting challenge for Joe O’Connor and his dedicated team.

Joe was appointed as General Manager in 2006 and, with a strong background in golf including senior appointments at City West Golf Club and South County Golf Club, he brings a wealth of experience, enthusiasm and vibrant ideas to his role.

“It’s a unique place as it attracts golfers of all ages and skill levels, and it’s so encouraging to see the regular mix of beginners, club golfers, high profile players, seniors and ladies, along with schools using the facilities to introduce kids to golf,’ says Joe.

The revamped Leopardstown Golf Centre is now ideally structured to meet the needs of a whole new generation of golfers, whether they choose to play the game for fun or aspire to become champion golfers.

“We are developing a number of schemes which are geared to raise the profile and heighten the Centre’s appeal to a wider audience,” explains Joe, adding, “A Junior Golf Academy under the direction of our resident PGA professionals is an important element going forward. Junior golfers are the lifeblood of the game.”

Thousands of golfing enthusiasts regularly enjoy the facilities and even if practice doesn’t turn everyone into a world beater, there is always the exciting prospect that the golfer in the bay next to you could a star of the future, perhaps even the next Padraig Harrington or Mary McKenna!
